I'm back!!
|
Although, the only real important thing (to me anyway) is that I FINALLY have 8Mb broadband service!!
Just downloaded a 372Mb file (which I didn't even need) at 835kbs (from a connection speed of 8137kbps) in next to no time at all!
It then took nearly as long to copy the file from my temp. internet folder to the desktop, where I saved the file to! Think that tells me I need a newer, faster HDD now :) |

Time for an update
|
Seeing as i've got all week at home, I though it was time to do a quick update.
So, the biggest news, which I've kept pretty quite about up til now, is that on Sunday, I had my eyes lasered. Theoretically, in a few days time, my eye sight will be back to a reasonable enough level not to require glasses anymore. For those who have known me quite some time, know that my prescription was pretty high, so being able to sit here on the sofa, playing on the computer and watching TV without glasses nor lenses is quite amazing. The procedure itself was OK, I don't wanna go into too much detail (for those who are a little =squeamish!), most of Sunday was spent sleeping it off at home, waiting for the eyes to stop stinging. Today has been the first of many checkups, which means driving out to Reading and back again. They were happy with most things but it appears I've got some "Sands of the Sahara" in my left eye. Apparently this is not too serious at the moment, but I'm now on increased eye drops for the next few days. Other than that, my vision is slowly returning, my left eye is slightly behind at the moment but that was my worse eye to start with. It'll take me some time to get used to not wearing glasses all day every day.
In other news, I'm now in the middle of changing departments at work, meaning less travel and more IT work. Over the next 3 - 6 months, this migration will become 100% so by early next year I'll be fully integrated into the IT department. Last week was the first week back at choir, and we're now working towards our first concert of the term and the Choir of the Year semi-finals in November.
Hope everyone is well. |

Heathrow Chaos
|
I'm now sat in T1 of Heathrow, waiting for my flight to Aberdeen to finally be called... I've been at the airport now for nearly 3 hours and probably got another hour before I actually get on the plane.
It was strange actually getting to the airport to find marquees filling the "drop-off" area outside the terminal and almost a DJ-style guy doing announcements over the tannoy of which flights were affected and what the latest regulations were on traveling. There were actually 3 girls camped under a blanket outside the main terminal... they seem to be in high spirits but looked as if they were settling in to a long wait! The check-in desks were chaos, even though I'd checked in on-line, the queue for all the desks (including the fast bag drop) were very long and extremely slow moving. I later found out this was because the baggage belts weren't working so the desks were all-but closed until they got them working again. After actually getting the bags checked in, I then had to take them to outsized baggage (as they contain delicate equipment) and of course that was another queue! I was pleasantly surprised however to find that the security checkpoint was virtually empty, and only one person in front of me! I guess that's because most of the people are still waiting to check-in or camp outside 'til their plane actually leaves.
All I can say is thank god for business lounges with free internet access and a mini-bar stocked with Boddingtons :P
* UPDATE * Just checked the departure board, and now has a further 30min delay! |

Is worrying when you hear "High Wycombe" mentioned on the news in relation to the terror plots, even worse when you recognise the road names and find their less than half a mile away from us!
3 properties in High Wycombe were raided this morning, one in Downley which is a few miles away, one in Micklefield which is about 1 mile the other way. The last one was just at the top of the road! |

Reading Phoenix
|
Well, the time has come again for another free concert for each and every one of you! I know, aren't we generous here at the Reading Phoenix. I'm sure the material might not be to everyone's taste, but I thought I'd mention it anyeay :-)
We are the again the featured choir on BBC Radio 2's Sunday Half Hour - you can listen again (but only for the next week until the link gets replaced!).
I don't think you can actually here me, which is generally a good sign that I haven't made any stupid mistakes! It was only recorded last weekend, so all praise on the BBC for getting it all seamlessly linked :-) We did record 2 programmes however, so part two is sometime in August I believe.
T'is all for now. |

Thanks to everyone who wished me many happy returns yesterday, I had a good day, although still being at work! Then spent 30mins in a traffic jam on my way out to a choir rehearsal in the evening so didn't get much time at home (but more than last year when I was stuck up in Aberdeen!)
Presents include (in no particular order)- Lots and lots of gardening tokens!
- Monies ;-)
- A blue-tooth headset for my new phone (Em's old one!)
- Socks and undies - the essentials
- A new AMD Duron Dual Core processor and motherboard - I bought it for myself, but it still arrived on my birthday!

Short but sweet entry for today...
Quick poll, even though I can't actually create LJ polls 'cos I've not got a posh account. Should I keep my webcams running on www.varnom.com or not? Simple answers of Yes or No will be accepted :-)
Most number of votes at the end of it decides its future!

Looks like poor little Mali has dislocated her tail! No idea how she did it but she came roaring in through the cat-flap yesterday afternoon with a limp thing hanging out behind her. She's been in a bit of pain over-night and not really eaten anything, so took her to the vet this morning, much to her distaste!
Shes on anti-biotics now or something like that to numb the pain and I've got to take her back on Friday for a checkup. Think she felt a lot better when she came home as she went straight for her food bowl and wolfed a load down... heh!
I suddenly felt last night (and this morning) what it must be like for parents when their kids get ill... completely useless in helping very much. Just hope she doesn't still hate me when I get home for putting her in her basket this morning and dragging her off the the vets! |

Been updating my website this evening, or really, should be saying the webcams which are seem on my website to be more precise! It now runs off Windows Media Encoder (still run from Blue Iris interface, which I must admit is brilliant!) - so it should be nice and fancy-looking now!
Even updated the script to allow patc to see all 4 cams at once, streaming rather than static, something that he requested last time he was down here. |

Hmmm.. Just bought a flat-screen monitor, an AG Neovo (as recommended by patc and it has a dead pixel on the screen.
Neither the company I bought it from nor AG will take it back unless there are more that 3 dead pixels! That's just wrong that you buy something that has a fault but can't take it back! |

Has anyone else been having lots of problems with Sky reception recently, what with all these thunder storms?
It seems as though the signal goes very poor at even the slightest amount of rain, sometimes being out for 15 minutes or so. Might not seem a long time but is annoying when it's in the middle of a programme!
I know Sky say that signal can be lost during severe weather, but hmmm! Going into the service setup, it still thinks its got service signal! The dish is reasonably aligned (done by myself and patc a year ago)... any ideas? |

1. Go into your LJ archive 2. Find your 23rd post 3. Find your 5th sentence (or closest to it) 4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions 5. Tag 5 people on your friend list
We were supposed to be starting our write up for Networking before Mark came back at 3, so that we could go home early, but as usual, it didn't go according to plan.
* that was way back in March '99... 2nd year of uni! *
Rather than tagging 5 people, I'll just let anyone do it :-) I don't have 5 friends to tag really! hehe |
